Coal dust explosion gallery at the Safety in Mines Research Board (SMRB) research site in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. The SMRB was a forerunner of what is today the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines. Experiments were carried out at galleries such as these that reproduced conditions inside mines. The experiments showed that coal dust was explosive under certain circumstances. The gallery at centre is around metres across. The one at left is around metres across. The Buxton site opened in 1927. Photographed in the 1930s.
