The European Space Agency's ExoMars spacecraft launched from Earth in March 2016 and reached Mars in October 2016. It is carrying the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO, left) and Schiaparelli (right), the ExoMars Demonstrator Module (EDM) lander. The separation of Schiaparelli from the TGO occurred on 15 October. The orbiting TGO will look for methane in the Martian atmosphere. Schiaparelli is due to descend to the surface on 19 October 2016, testing new landing technologies that will be used by the ExoMars rover (2018). Schiaparelli is also carrying scientific instruments to study the surface following a successful landing.
