This prevents valve clat-ter at high engine speeds. Double valve springs are usedto prevent synchronism between the valves and therest of the mechanism from causing floating. The valve tappets are easily accessible, as the tappetguides are held in place merely by the push rod inclosingtube. The tubes which inclose the push rods andthrough which the engine breathes are not fixed in place, but are pushed up into a counterbore in the bottom ofthe cylinder head and have a nut at the bottom endwhich presses down against the valve tappet guide. Thelatter is thereby held in place by the tube and the pushrod completely inclosed. The valve tappet guides aregrouped in pairs and have between them a small fillisterhead screw which prevents their turning in the cylindercasting. The valve mechanism, including the rocker arms, is. lew of the sei \es / Li xington chassis 6 AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRIES THE AUTOMOBILE January 6, 1921 completely inclosed, and the breather is located in thepressed steel valve cover on the top of the cylinder insures a plentiful supply of oil to the valve rockerarms and the cup in the rocker arm is always full of clearance can be adjusted while the engine isrunning, which is said to be a great convenience. A conventional three-bearing camshaft is used. Thevalve timing is as follows. Exhaust closes and intakeopens at 10 deg. past top dead center; exhaust opens 50deg. ahead of bottom dead center and intake closes 57deg. after bottom dead center. The front bearing doesnot support the camshaft directly, but through a sleevewhich carries the ignition distributor gear at its rearend and a flange at the front end. To the latter the cam-shaft gear is secured with four cap screws. End playis taken up at the forward end by a phosphor bronzethrust washer,
