Meeting of the General Board of Health, Gwydyr House, Whitehall, London. Figure seated on right is Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890) who agitated for a Sanitary Commission which came into effect in 1839. The Public Health Act of 1848 which established the General Board of Health was due largely to him. From The Illustrated London News, October 1849.
