The Pupu Hydro walkway follows an old gold-mining water race. It was subsequently re-used for generating hydro electric power to the local area.
The Pupu Historic Hydro walkway retraces an old gold mining water is situated some 9km from Takaka and provides an interesting hike of just under 2 hours following the line of the restored water race for some 3 kms as it follows the contours of the took 8 men just 6 months to complete. Gold was mined in th area until 1910 when it was abandoned. In 1929 The Golden Bay Electric Power Board built a small hydro electric station (HEP) which took its water from the race. In 1981 after a fault developped the company decided that it was too expensive to repair and again it fell into disrepair. After long negotiations the Pupu Hydro Society began to restore the site and on 10th April 1988 the site once again generated electricity. Volunteers continue to work on the project and profits made are used for the good of the Golden Bay Community at large.
