I thank ; C. L. Allen said : "Highly as I appre- ciate what your toastmaster has said, I wisli he would put that in writing, be- cause those who know me best have a good deal of reason to doubt what he has said. I do not know how to make a speech, and I have a wonderful respect for that old proverb 'Don't say anything when you have nothing to say.' I have been having a good deal of a tussel with a worker and creator of new things, and there is no doubt but that he is authority one new creations. I also claim that honor myself. Some two or three years ago a friend of mine, Mr. Johnson, was called upon to make an address before the American Institute, and he could talk as far as tlie rivers could flow, and some- times he talked more in theory than in practice. After he got through I kindly suggested that if he would make use of my brain with his flow of eloquence, he would make one of the best horticul- turists in the country. As a philantliro- pist Socrates was not in it; as a poec Homer was all to the bad ; as a man of wit and humor, our old friend Chauncey, even before he was lost, could not compare with my ; Toastmaster: I am going to propose a toast to our friend Charles McCullough, who is absent from us. (Toast drank, singing "For he's a jolly good fellow"). We have a member of his family with us tonight, from the "valley of the Rhine" (or the rye) and I have pleasure in in- troducing Albert McCullough of Cincin- nati, who will say a few words to us.
