Central venous catheterisation. Central venous catheter being inserted into the internal jugular vein in the neck of a patient. A central venous catheter is a catheter (tube) placed into a large vein in the neck (internal jugular vein), chest (subclavian vein or axillary vein) or groin (femoral vein). It is used to administer medication or fluids, obtain blood tests, and directly obtain cardiovascular measurements such as the central venous pressure. Here it is passed through the jugular vein until the tip lies inside the superior vena cava, leading directly to the heart's right atrium.
