Ultrasound breast scanning. An female patient has her breast scanned by ultrasound, after symptoms of a breast abnormality were found. A portable transducer is moved over the breast, while an image of breast tissue can be seen on the monitor. Ultrasound employs high-frequency sound waves which gives a two-dimensional image of a scanned tissue slice . In breast scanning it is used to distinguish between solid lumps and fluid-filled cysts. It is a technique usually used once a mammogram (X-ray) of the breast has revealed an abnormality. During the ultrasound scanning, a biopsy needle may be used to obtain a tissue sample for testing.
