Geoffrey Wilkinson (1921-1996), British chemist. Wilkinson won the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1973 with Ernst Otto Fischer for their independent work on the chemistry of sandwich compounds. Sandwich compounds contain a metal atom between two aromatic hydrocarbon units. The most famous is the Wilkinson compound which is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals.
