Ring ca. 1760 European This gold and diamond ring was presented to Judith Crommelin (1739-1803) by Samuel Verplanck (1739-1820) at the time of their engagement in 1760. The rose cut diamonds are placed in closed-back settings, a typical fabrication technique used during the eighteenth century. Samuel Verplanck was a member of an influential New York City merchant family; a suite of parlor furniture from the couple’s eighteenth-century Wall Street townhouse can be viewed in the American Wing’s gallery Ring 6863
