Planetary Entry Parachute Program (PEPP) aeroshell being prepared for launch at Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, New Mexico, USA. This aeroshell was used to test parachutes for the NASA Voyager Mars program in the 1960s. The balloon at right lifted the aeroshell to a height of 39 kilometres, where atmospheric conditions are closer to those on Mars. The aeroshell detached from the balloon and fired rockets that propelled it to over Mach The parachute deployed and slowed the craft's descent back to Earth. The Voyager Mars program was later cancelled, but the parachute was used for all future Mars missions.
