The mineral covellite, also called covelline, is a copper sulphide (CuS) with a characteristic iridescent, indigo-blue colour. Covellite is always a secondary mineral in copper rich deposits, either in the form of rosettes or platy crystals, but more often in massive, non-crystalline form. It is most commonly found as a coating on or mixed with other copper sulphates such as chalcocite, bornite, pyrite and other. The thin section here shot in polarized transmitted light emphasizes the platy habitat often adopted by the crystals. Actual size is 25 x 33 mm.
