Cancer research. Researcher purifying human immune system cells called natural killer (NK) cells, to investigate how they protect against cancer. This is part of pioneering work (published in 2009) that discovered the role of the gene E4bp4 in producing NK cells. NK cells are a type of white blood cell. This work is being carried out in London, UK, by researchers from Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), and the Medical Research Council's National Institute for Medical Research. Photographed in 2009.
