The operating mechanism in the center of the rheo-stat is controlled by a balanced pressure operatingmechanism, which is mounted above and between thetwo rheostats. The cross-arm extending from thismechanism is connected to each of the overflow tubes bya rod. Thus the raising or lowering of this cross-armraises or lowers the level of the liquid. The master controller consists of two separate andindependently operated drums, not mechanically inter-locked, but both interlocked with the reverse drum, sothat both handles must be in the off position before. PLAN VIEW OF RHEOSTAT TANKS AND OPERATINGMECHANISM 314 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XLVII, No. 7 the reverse drum can be thrown. The speed drum hasfour on positions to set up the required combinationof pole change-over drums, reverses and primaryswitches. Between the 14 and off positions thereis a notch which will give a 14 combination onone truck only in each unit. This is useful for handlinga light engine, switching, or starting long trains ofempties. The other division is between the combinations. This is for changing overfrom 14 to 28 without losing tractive effortor causing sudden jolts in the train. The transition ismade by first changing over one pair of motors in eachunit to 28 and as soon as the rheostat for thesemotors has reached the flush-level condition on combination, the speed handle is moved to thefull position, thus changing over the remain-ing pair of motor
