Jersey City is situated on the west bank of HudsonRiver, opposite New York, and is connected with thatcity by a steam-ferry, over a mile in length, the boatson which are constantly plying. According to the cen-sus of 1843, its population was 3,750, bemg an increaseof 700 smce 1840. At the present time (1849) it isabout 12,000. It has become an unportant place,
