Computer display of an electron-positron collision which gave rise to a Z particle in the DELPHI detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The Z immediately decays into a quark and an antiquark, which in turn give rise to the two jets of other particles that shoot out back-to- back. The blue & purple lines represent parts of the giant cylindrical detector, which recorded particle collisions at CERN's LEP collider. As one of the carrier particles of the weak nuclear force (along with the electrically charged W particles, the W-plus and W-minus), the neutral Z is a type of particle called a gauge boson.
