Having never seen one of them, except in bottles of spirits, I shall quote literally from the writings of Jordan, and from the notes furnished me by Dr. Bean, who has tabulated the principal characters as follows : SPECIES OF ONCORHYNCHUS. A. Scales small, lateral line more than 200. AA. Scales large, 125 to 155. a. Gill-rakers long, 30 to 40. aa. Gill-rakers short, 20 to 25. b. Pyloric coeca 50 to 80. hb. Pyloric coeca 140 or more, c. Anal rays 13 to 14 : hranchiostegals J3 to 14. cc. Anal rays 16: hranchiostegals 15 to 19. O. GORBUSCHA. O. NERKA. O. KISUTCH. O. KETA. O. CHOUICHA. The Gorbuscha, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, is still known to the Russians as in the time of Pennant and Pallas by the name of " Gorbuscha," gorb meaning hump. The English-speaking people call it generally the " Hump-back Salmon," and often the " Dog ; On Frazer River it is known as "Holia" or "Hone" Salmon, and on Puget Sound as the " ; This is one of the smallest Salmons, not averaging over.
