WWI, German Dugout
German troops endure a British bombardment on a dugout. Fully armed they are ready to rush back to the front line once the artillery barrage ceases. Dugouts were used extensively as protection from shelling during WWI in the Western Front. They were an important part of the trench warfare as they were used as an area to rest and carry out other activities such as eating. They would usually range in size from dugouts that could hold several men to dugouts that could hold thousands of soldiers. They were lined with concrete, wood and/or steel to withstand the shock of artillery, accessed via a set of wooden stairs. No date or location available.
