A palm tree growing in Stromness in the Orkney Isles, Northern Scotland, UK. The Orkney Isles lie on a similar latitude as Bergen in Norway and to southern Alaska, amazing then that palm trees grow. The only reason they do is because of the Gulf Stream which bathes the Orkneys in relatively warm water from further south, making the islands mainly snow and frost free. Climate change is slowing the Gulf Stream, as more fresh water from melting glaciers pours into the north Atlantic.
