He is seated in a flag-draped armchair. The figureis 19 feet high. The statue was carved from 28 large blocks ofGeorgia marble, and weighs 150 tons. Four years were required forits completion. The pedestal, of Tennessee marble, is 16 feet wide,17 feet deep, and 11 feet 7 inches high. On the wall above thestatue is the inscription: In this temple as in the hearts of thepeople for whom he saved the Union the memory of Abraham Lincoln isenshrined forever.
