The conneotion ofthe upper gauge glass to the top tank was removedand the liquor v?as poured in through a gauge glass fittings tightened up wefound it necessarj^ to add more ammonia and thisliquor had to be drawn in by getting a vacuum onthe machine. Getting a vacutim on the machineis explained in detail in the follOT/ing 15. te3tii:g for le^^ks After all connections were applied with lithargeand tightened up, the machine and piping could betested for leaks. The gas burner .va-s lighted un-der the generator and absorber and the ammoniawas boiled until a reading of about fifty-fivepounds was obtained on the pressure gauge. Thisammonia was sent through the system on that pressureby opening all the valves. If the leak was verybad you could easily detect it by the strong odorof ammonia gas issuing through the opening. Ifthe leak is very small, as shown by a small dropof pressure on the pressure gauge, other methodsof locating the leak must be used. One method weused, was to pass a lighted sulphur wick aroundall joints and connections and the leak can be de-tected by the white fumes which Issue due to theuniting chemically of the ammonia and sulphurdioxide gases. j:i:vf ?•: *t!f$•.*? :;^£i rH
