Some growers advocate pot culture through the summer for berried solanums, but field culture has always given us far better results and nearly all successful growers adopt this method of culture. C. W. TO GROW ATRICAN VIOLETS. Will you advise us as to how we can best handle African violets? How much light should they have? How should they be watered? What temperature do they require? R. G. C.—Kan. Saintpaulia ionantha, the African vio- let, is a native of tropical Africa. Its cultural requirements are similar to those of gloxinia. It is a member of the natural order gesneriace«e and suc- ceeds well in a temperature of i)5 to 60 degrees in winter. Some growers partially rest Saint- paulia ionantha in summer, but, if it is kept watered, it will flower the whole year round. It needs a moderate shade and a light soil containing some leaf- mold and sand. It succeeds best in small pots three to five inches in diame- ter, and it must have ample drainage. It proves specially useful with us in October, November and December. Its propagation is simple. Cut off one inch of stalk with the leaves and insert this in a good bottom heat. Every leaf will root, with careful treat- ment. Leaf cuttings are preferable to seedlings; the latter are much more variable in type. Avoid dampening the leaves when watering. C. W. EAB, SWEET PEAS.
