Mental diseasesA text-book of psychiatry for medical students and practitioners . This energy is generated from the surroundinglymph, but it also arises largely by transmission from the lowerlevels of the nervous system, and is derived for the most partfrom the muscular and organic viscera which replenish thehigher levels. In the natural process of Senile decay thecortical neurons atrophy, in great measure from this want ofvis a tergo especially from the \TLscera. Consciousness being concerned with the activity of thehighest neurons of the cortex cerebri, fully charged withenergy, it may be said to be connected \^dth the passage ofnervous impulses from neuron to neuron in the association andother areas. In these areas, organisation, which is the feature inthe lower levels of the nervous s^stem, is onh in process of for-mation as mental growth proceeds. It is possible that theaction of certain drugs, and that of the products of fatigue, mayaffect the conductivity of the adjoining SA^napses in these areas,as much as, or even more than, that of the neurons Axon.
