RAFFAELLO Sanzio (b. 1483, Urbino, d. 1520, Roma) St John the Baptist c. 1518 Oil on canvas, 165 x 147 cm Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence This painting was carried out to Raphael's design by workshop assistants. The brown rocky background and the modelling of the figures show the strong influence of Leonardo. The quality of the light is not typical of Leonardo, though; it does not surround the figures softly but models them sharply. From 1589 the painting was in the Galleria degli Uffizi, then in the Palazzo Pitti. It was restored in 1989. --- Keywords: -------------- Author: RAFF
