Beowulf is a legendary Geatish figure and the epic hero of the tale Beowulf, one of the oldest surviving pieces of literature in the English language. In the tale, Beowulf was raised by the Geats and when the monster Grendel harnasses the Geats, Beowulf sets sail from Geatland (southern Sweden) for Daneland (also called Zealand) - the largest island of Denmark. With him are 14-18 (the number varies according to the account) Geat warriors. In this 1917 illustration, Beowulf is shown sailing for Daneland.
