The Congress voted to pay theGreen Mountain Boys for their service at Ticonderoga andrecommended the colony of New York to authorize the for-mation of a regiment on the New Hampshire Grants underofficers of their own choice. With this recommendationand a letter from the president of Congress, Allen andWarner went to New York, the residence of their mostbitter enemies, and appeared before the provincial congressthen in session there, asking leave to form a regimentaccording to the advice of the Continental Congress. Theregiment was at length formed and Seth Warner was Soldiers Monument at ManchesterDedicated July 4, 1905, to the soldiers of all the wars i66 History of Vermont 4. Invasion of Canada.—In the early autumn of1775 an army was sent into Canada under the immediatecommand of General Montgomery, and Warners regimentmade a part of it. While the main army was besieging , Colonel Ethan Allen and Major John Brown, whohad been to Canada the spring before, with Peleg Sunder-land for a guide were sent, each with a small force, toarouse the Canadians for the American cause. When bothwere in the vicinity of Montreal, which was but slightlyprotected, they formed a plan for its capture.
