It was written to make available for others the practicalknowledge which had been acquired in the work of the bacteriologicallaboratories of the city of New York, and was intended more formedical practitioners than for medical students or laboratory the second edition had been exhausted the improvement inmethods of cultivating and studying the protozoa had reached a pointrendering it advantageous to include the animal as well as the vegetablegerms. This was done and the title of the third edition was altered toconform with the text, which had been broadened to give in outlinepractically the whole field of pathogenic microorganisms.
