Rolle- STON, CORRESPONDENCE MARTIALS EPIGRAMS RELATING TO MEDICAL PRACTICEAND MEDICAL MEN Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis), thecelebrated Latin epigrammatist, was bornin 43 A. D. Our knowledge of his life isderived only from his writings. His birth-place was in Bilbilis, Spain. He moved toRome in 64 a. d., one year I)efore the fallof Seneca and Lucan who probably werehis first patrons. Martial died in the seventy-fifth yearof his age. His epigrams deal with most ofthe situations in life and will no doubt beread as long as the Latin language will beunderstood. They contain a great fund ofinformation regarding the manners andcustoms of his time and are full of wit andsatire. I have compiled the following epigramsfrom Martial in relation to the physicianand to physic.
