An old engraving of City of London gasworks during Victorian times. It is from a book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. Local gasworks for producing town-gas for lighting and heating purposes were dotted all over the city. It helped if water transport was available to bring in the coal needed to fuel the gas production – as here where barges on the Regents Canal brought in the coal. The gas was stored in the large circular gas holder (gasholder or gasometer) seen centre right.
