Numerousbranches of learning, sources of recreation at once refinedand helpful, and opportunities for self-culture of body andmind are freely offered. On the first Tuesday evening in August in each year theopening of the Chautauqua Assembly takes place. On thatoccasion great crowds come from the regions round about,sure of a tempest of song and merriment, or wit and elo-quence, on the auditorium platform, under the trees, andlater in the great amphitheater.
