Ibexes rampant … two long-horned Alpine or Capra ibexes or mountain goats flank a cross as they rear up to fight in heraldic or armorial art painted on the front of a restored traditional Engadin house in Scuol Sot, the old or lower town at Scuol in the Graubünden or Grisons canton of eastern Switzerland. Many historic houses here have been renovated, with new owners carefully preserving features such as oriel windows, bread ovens, sgraffito art and painted coats of family arms.
Scuol, Graubünden or Grisons canton, Switzerland: ibexes rampant … two long-horned Alpine or Capra ibexes or mountain goats rear on their hind legs to fight on either side of a cross, in heraldic or armorial art painted on the facade of one of the restored traditional Engadin houses preserved in Scuol Sot, the old or lower town built close to the alpine River Inn or En. The ibexes, their grey bodies outlined in orange, raise their front hooves as they face each other below windows framed by painted orange chequerboard borders and enhanced by trailing plants in window boxes. Scuol Sot, the most historic part of this Romansh-speaking spa town in the Lower Engadine Valley, is a maze of narrow, winding stone-paved lanes, cobbled alleys and small squares centred on bubbling spring-water fountains. Many of the ancient traditional houses have been restored over recent decades, with their new owners carefully preserving architectural and artistic features such as dual or double aspect oriel windows, bread ovens, sgraffito decoration, inscriptions in Romansh and painted coats of family arms.
