Jean-Louis Pons (1761-1831), French astronomer and discoverer of comets. He discovered 37 comets during his life. The most famous, however, does not bear his name. He discovered what is now known as Encke's comet, but it was named after Johann Encke, who calculated its orbital period. Encke's comet has the shortest period of any known comet, orbiting the Sun once every years.
