Grass snake (Natrix natrix). This non-venomous snake lives in meadows, marshes and on the edge of rivers, streams and canals. It feeds on frogs, toads and newts. It has a forked tongue (not seen), which it uses as a sense organ to smell the presence of prey. N. natrix usually measures between and 2 metres in length. This snake is found throughout Europe, in western Asia and in north-western Africa.
