The engines are modified four-cyclesolid-injection Diesel engines of the airplane type builtby William Beardmore & Co., Ltd., London, England, and have four 84 by 12-in. cylinders for the small unit 230 RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVK ENGINEERING August, 192- and eight cylinders of the same size for the large two cntrines develop 185 at 700 and at 650 , and weighs 15 and 16 lb. per ,respectively. As regards electric equipment, the small unit has a105-kw., 600-volt, direct-current, ikitish Thomson-Hous-. Oiesel-Lentz Locomotive ton differentially compound-wound gcneratur with a separate , and two 150 ampere 600-voltGeneral Electric motors which drive the front truck axlesthrough helical gears. The car speed is controlled by theoil-engine throttle and the Lemp automatic control sys-tem. The operating handle controls the throttle and an-other handle connects the motors to the generator circuitin series or parallel, or in reverse. Thelarge unit has a Westinghouse 200-k\v.,600-volt direct-current differentially com-pound-wound generator with excitationfrom a 300-voIt battery, and four 145-ampere 600-volt Westinghouse motorsconnected pemianently in parallel anddriving the front and rear truck axlesthrough helical gears. The car speed iscontrolled by the modified Ward Leonardsystem—with constant engine speed bygovernor and by resistances in the maingenerator field and by
