In acquiring the art of timing the hit in batting, the batsmanshould first learn the bearings of the natural swing of the bat inmeeting the ball, and the different effect of a swift and a slow strokein forming these bearings. Measuring the semi-circular line of theswing of the bat from its position as it is held over the shoulder, tothe point of its meeting the ball, it will be seen that the swiftness ofthe stroke has a great deal to do with giving direction to the slow stroke will meet tte ball back of the base ; a medium strokewill meet it on the line of the base, and a quick stroke in front of lines of these strokes are shown in the following diagram.
