In one instance grammes were excretedin twenty-four hours. Very curiously, diminished elimination of ammonia is observedin many cases of nephritis so long as symptoms of venous stasisdo not exist. In a case of pernicious anaemia relative amounts, varying and per cent., were obtained during the days immediatelypreceding death. Quantitative Estimation.—Schlosings Method.—Principle.—Acarefully measured amount of urine is treated with milk of limeand placed under a bell, together with a vessel containing a known Fig. Desiccator. amount of a normal solution of sulphuric acid. In the course oftime the ammonia is liberated and absorbed by the acid. This isthen titrated, and the deficit expressed in terms of ammonia. Method.—Twenty-five of perfectly fresh, filtered urine areplaced in a flat dish, upon the plate of a desiccator, as shown inFig. 93. Above this is a smaller dish containing 10 of a nor-mal solution of sulphuric acid. The urine is treated with 10 milk of lime, the bell is carefully adjusted after lubricationwith tallow, and the apparatus allowed to stand for at least threeor four days. The excess of acid remaining is then titrated with aone-fourth normal solution of sodium hydrate, using as an indicatora few drops of a saturated aqueous solution of methyl-orange untilthe red color has turned to yellow.
