Farther up the ShenandoahRiver, on the V^irginia side,John Browns Fort stands byitself in a lonely field, where itwas rebuilt on its return fromthe Chicago Worlds Fair. The Valley Branch of theBaltimore & Ohio Railroad ex-tends from Harpers Ferry upthe beautiful Shenandoah Val-ley, wherein are located manyfamous health and pleasure resorts. Itwas in this valley that some of the bloodiestencounters of the Civil War took NATURAL STAIRWA 10 THE ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS AND ITS VARIOUS SUMMER RESORTS. BEDFORD SPRINGS, PA. Bedford Springs, located at Bedford, Pa.,ten miles from Hyndman Station on themain line of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad,in the Allegheny Mountains, 1,100feet above tide-water, comprisethe Magnesia Spring, the SulphurSpring, the Pure Spring, and theIron Spring. The mountain air isbracing, the nights are delightful,with no mos(|uitoes, and malaria isunheard of. It has been patron-ized as a summer resort for three-quarters of a century, and theattractions of the place are wellknown. Celebrated as mineral watershave become all over the worldfor the cure of disease, there havebeen none to surpass, and in thiscountry none to equal in virtue,the Bedford Magnesia Spring. The Sulphur Spring rises on tht-west side of Shovers Creek, abouttwo hundred yards distant fromthe Magnesia Spring. It is less copiousthan the others, and the water exhales avery strong odor of sulphureted hydro
