Caption: Ser'xu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2002. Two Khampa horsemen competing in the acrobatics event at the Ser'xu Horseracing Festival, Eastern Tibet. In daring acts of heroism, competitors gallop at top speeds through a makeshift arena, leaning down- or over backwards- to collect silk karta's (lucky scarves) off the ground. The festivals are the remaining vestiges over from the great clan gatherings, where the nomadic tribes of Eastern Tibet would meet annualy to settle disputes over land, leadership and who had the fastest horse, or in some cases yak. A once every three year event, the Serxu festival is the biggest and most prestigous in Eastern Tibet.
