Althoughin the main confining himself to a description of phy-sical signs, the author has occasionally stepped asideto consider the mechanism,—yet not without the fullconsciousness, that in the present state of thoracicacoustics, (and, indeed, of acoustics in general,) allefforts of the kind must be merely tentative. If, onthe one hand, the theories of the immortal discovererof auscultation do not, in all instances, bear the testof clinical scrutiny, those of his German critics seemneither to be always in harmony with the
