As her industrial centersgrew, agriculture lost its preeminence in NewEngland. Today ninety-two per cent of the people of the Old Colony live in towns. Others joined the all-conquering host which settled theWest, and joined the Atlantic and Pacific with a homo-geneous population thoroughly permeated with New Eng-land ideals — free institutions, popular education, andpersonal and public probity and integrity.
