It was necessary toexcavate for the new circle wall ten feetbehind the old circle and still keep theroundhouse tracks in service. Thismeant the timbering of twenty-seventracks and the new wall built under-neath, while approximately 1950 yardsof excavation and 350 yards of concretehad to be placed.
