From a wholesale point of view the market is much better than it was a week ago. Looking at it from the re- tail side the improvement is not so apparent, as the change seems to be due more to a reduction in supply than to an increase in demand.' There has, no doubt, been considerable increase in the number of out-of-town orders, as these are always more numerous when the crops are light. ' City retail trade has not improved to any great degree, which leads one to believe that busi- ness is about the same with the out-of- town buyers, but that they are forced to send here for a larger part of their supply than they did earlier in the season. Prices naturally have advanced. Com- paring the sales of the last seven days with those of the corresponding seven days of last year, business seems to be more nearly normal than at any other time in .the last six months. Prices on roses are below those of last year, but the supply, though short, still is con- siderably larger thin a year ago. Car- nation prices were falling rapidly a year ago at this time, whereas they are now going up. While there has been a sharp reduc- tion in the aggregate quantity of stock coming on the market, there are still enough flowers to go around. The pos- sible exception is short roses. There has been a great increase in the amount of bulbous stock on the market. Easter lilies are scarce, and the demand for them is great. Violets are plentiful and the stock is really fine; the only complaint is that the demand will not take care of the cut. Sweet peas could be no better. The high d
