Of all animals, is the moft fluggifli and inaftivej and,if we were to judge from outward appearance, wouldfeem the moft helplefs and wretched. All its motionsfeem to be the efFedt of the moft painful exertion, whichhunger alone is capable of exciting. It lives chiefly in trees •, and having afcended one withinfinite labour and difficulty, it remains there till it hasentirely ftripped it of all its verdure, fparing neitherfruit, bJoiTom, nor leaf; after which it is faid to devoureven the bark. Being unable to defcend, it throws itfelfon the ground, and continues at the bottom of the treetill hunger again compels it to renew its toils in fearch offubfiftence. Its motions are accompanied with a moft piteous andlamentable cry, which terrifies even beafts of prey, andproves its beft defence. Though flow, aukward, and almoft incapable of mo-tion, the Sloth is ftrong, remarkably tenacious of life,. and capable of enduring a long abftinence
