In the novel Dombey and Son by the English novelist Charles Dickens, Paul is a principal character, here with sister Florence.

In the novel Dombey and Son (published in parts between 1846 and 1848) by the English novelist Charles Dickens, Dr. Blimber and his wife run a school where one of the main characters, Paul, is sent for his education. The education there is arduous and intense and the boys are under the care of Mr. Feeder and Cornelia Blimber. Paul has an older sister, Florence, whom their father neglects because he dreams of his son inheriting his business. Young Paul and Florence are shown here by the seashore. Paul dies at a young age and the father does finally reconnect with Florence. The illustration dates to 1892.
