The furnace is of aspecial combination electrode and inductiontype, known as the Roechling Rodenhauser, and takes three-phase current at 25 pig iron is blown in a basic lined Bes-semer converter, then transferred to theelectric furnace for refining at an expenditureof power of 125 kilowatt hours per ton. Re-cently some tests have been published, madeNovember 27,1908. The analysis of the three pieces then tested was as follows: Per cent. Carbon 0. 75 Silicon Manganese Sulphur Phosphorus The rails were of flange section, pounds to the yard. * Steel, Harbord and Hall, London, 1911, pp. 261-283. f Railroad Age Gazette, July 2, Fig. Furnace. Stassano Electric(Lake.)The furnace is inclined to the vertical androtated by the mechanism shown below. 386 STEEL RAILS Physical tests were made on these rails; the pieces have a length betweenpunch marks of inches and a diameter of almost inch, being .975,.966, .984 respectively. These results are given below: Number. UltimateStress. Elongation. Reduction ofArea. 1 123,341126,172122,765 Per Per cent. 2 3 They show excellent ductility, in conjunction with tenacity.
