RXR and LXR nuclear receptors and DNA. Molecular model of a strand of DNA (dexyribonucleic acid, yellow) and two nuclear receptors (coiled strands, proteins) being acted on by drug molecules (space-filled models). At left is a liver X receptor (LXR, pale blue) in complex with the drug GW3965. At right is a retinoic X receptor (RXR, blue) in a complex with retinoic acid. Both receptors can bind to DNA specific sequences to act like master gene regulators. They play a central role in metabolic homeostasis, regulating glucose and lipid pathways. The drugs used on these receptors are studied for use in treating multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, diabetes, inflammation, and Alzheimer's disease.
