Bladder stone. Historical engraving of a young male lithotomy patient beside an 8 inch (20 cm) bladder stone removed from him. The surgery was conducted at Guy's Hospital, London, in 1739. Lithotomy, cutting into the bladder to remove a stone, has long been carried out with some success, such as on the London diarist Samuel Pepys. The patient shown here recovered well.
