War between the two counts appearedimminent. The mediation of their friends, how-ever, induced them to submit the matter to ajudicial combat, which was decided in favour ofthe Count of Ponthieu. The fortress, as it then became, was for somecenturies alternately French and English. Itwas ceded by treaty to Edward I of England,who restored the town and its fortific
