The total strength of the expedition at this time consisted of Dillon, Murphy, and myself, Issa (our store-keeper), thirty-five askari (including Bombay, who was supposed to command them), one hundred and ninety-two pagazi, six servants, cooks, and gun-bearers, and three boys. We had also twenty-two donkeys and three dogs, and several of the men had with them women and slaves, so that, numerically, we were an imposing force. May, RIDING DONKEYS.
