In 1812 young Carlin came to Illinois and partici-pated in all the ranging service incident to thewar of that period, proving himself a soldier of un-daunted bravery. In 1814 he married RebeccaHuitt, and lived for four years on the bank of theMississippi River, opposite the mouth of the Mis-souri, where he followed farming, and then removedto Greene County.
